First. Ever. Post. Woah!
Welcome to Bread + Barrow, a New England based food and life style blog hosted by me, Meg, and my amazing other half, Philip. I will be doing the writing (yikes) and recipe developing while Phil is the talent behind the camera and web design. I'm going to be honest with you- because I feel that honesty is the best policy while starting a new relationship (and thats what this is, right?) - I am one hundred percent afraid of writing. It gets me all nervous and anxious and I really struggle with it. I am hoping that this blog, to some extent, helps me conquer that fear a bit.
But, that is not the point of this blog (it's just my own little selfish angle) – this blog is our attempt to show others the beauty that our home state, our little piece of this world, holds. Phil and I have both called Massachusetts home for our whole lives. He was born and raised on Cape Ann, and me on Cape Cod. Last year we bought our first home together in a quaint village called Hamilton, on Cape Ann. We instantly fell in love with the many horse pastures and fieldstone walls that line the streets. Our home was built in the late 1700's, and while it has a lot of charm and antique details that we don't want to change, it needs some work.
In this little space we have named Bread + Barrow, I want to share with friends, family, and whom ever else wanders through, the beauty and challenges we face in our every day lives. I want to show you the progress (although slow at times) we make in renovating our antique home, the garden we have to tame because it was left unloved for many years, the failures and successes I have in the kitchen (so many failures...and I promise to still share those as well!) and the day-to-day events with friends and family that make our lives full. I hope to capture and illustrate the beauty that not only Massachusetts, but all of New England, has to offer. I want to show you how to tap Maple trees in Vermont, dig for clams in Essex, have a proper lobster bake on the beaches of Falmouth, find fiddle heads in the marshes of our back yard, and appreciate all that New England has to offer.
It is my hope that Bread + Barrow will truly live up to the “farm to table” mentality, show casing New England's treasures, both in the working farms that we call neighbors, and in the natural resources we hold at our fingertips. This is not only a goal for this blog, but also for myself as a New Englander. Use what is local, get outside and open your eyes to what assets are before you. Use the ocean, the mountains, the fields. Support your farmers and your local community. It is a challenge, and one I hope you take with me.
