This event has already happened - but you can read all about it on Betty's blog here!
Summer is in full swing here in New England, but our heads and hearts are already focused on our favorite season - fall. Join Betty and Meg for a long weekend in Tamworth, a sleepy little town nestled in the Lakes and White Mountain region of New Hampshire. The roads are quiet and winding, rolling through the mountains and along the running rivers. Giant pine trees tower over head while the hushed footsteps of a doe linger in the meadows. It is a magical place, with beauty and wonder at every corner.
Our lodging is a beautiful farm house built in the 1840's. There are wood burning fire places in the kitchen and living room, a long pine table perfect for large shared meals, a patio with a fire pit that is surrounded by gardens, and a restored barn just begging to have its photo taken. In what used to be a working farm, we will use the beauty of the natural surroundings to bring in to our photos and our styling, harnessing the essence of the season in our creativity with cooking, photography and styling.
During our stay, we will be visiting a brick oven bakery located just walking distance from our little farm house. It is a small, family run business grown right out of the bakers home. There we will learn her process on developing a sour dough yeast culture, experience getting our hands in the dough and how to bring that knowledge in to your own home kitchen. We will also be bringing loaves home with us to share at our dinner table!
We will also have the exciting experience of mushroom foraging. The New Hampshire Mushroom Company is located in little Tamworth, and we will be using that to our advantage! We will be able to explore the hiking trails, searching for mushrooms together. After we gather as many mushrooms as we can find, our guide will identify the mushrooms for us, and teach us which ones are edible and which to avoid. After our adventure we will share a meal based around our mushrooms and seasonal flavors.
While we have a few adventures planned, this weekend will be focused mainly on learning photography, styling and photo editing.
This is a completely hands on weekend. We will spend a whole day devoted to food styling, including recipe development from start to finish, incorporating the human element, manipulating natural light, plating, and prop selection. We will go over the basics of internal camera settings in an interactive classroom setting. This is a chance for you to dive into photography, to overcome any barriers and truly learn how to use your camera in manual mode. We are going to learn how to work with natural light to coax your vision to life. We will talk about the position of the sun, and show you how you can style the environment to fit your vision. We will talk about seasonal food, as well as some basic foraged ingredients to use. We will spend some time on menu composition, and how we go about developing a recipe. We will show you how we photograph your ingredients, with props and different backgrounds. We will show you how to bring the added element of people in to your photos. Every day we will have live demonstrations of styling vignettes: how to tell a story using light, props, and food. We are going to tell you all our tricks and secrets, but the best part is that you can take everything we tell you and still produce something completely individual and unique to your own personal style.
We invite you to come learn and share a table with us.
